UPM Communication Papers accelerates progress toward 2030 climate target
UPM Communication Papers has published its 2025 climate report, showing continued strong progress in reducing emissions across its European operations. Fossil CO₂ emissions from own operations and purchased energy (Scope 1 and 2) decreased by 38% per tonne of paper in 2025 compared to the 2023 baseline.
In November 2025, the business launched its climate action roadmap with a target to reduce fossil CO₂ emissions at its European mills to an average of ≤100 kg per tonne of paper by 2030. This corresponds to a reduction of more than 70% from the 2023 level and supports customers in meeting their own climate targets through lower-carbon products and transparent emissions data.
In 2025, the average Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint at UPM Communication Papers’ European mills was 310 kg CO₂ per tonne of paper, down from 400 kg in 2024 and 490 kg in 2023.
According to UPM Communication Papers, the reduction was driven by improvements in energy sourcing, production efficiency and logistics, including increased use of renewable electricity, expanded electric boiler capacity and enhanced energy efficiency and transport planning.
“We set a clear direction with our climate action roadmap, and the 2025 results show that our actions are delivering measurable progress. This translates into tangible emissions reductions for our customers, supported by transparent, third-party verified data,” says Gunnar Eberhardt, Executive Vice President, UPM Communication Papers.
While UPM Blandin in the United States is not included in the European 2030 target, the mill also made progress in 2025, reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 31% compared to 2024.
