Volvo launches electric truck for up to 80 tonnes with 420 km range at 76 tonnes
Volvo Trucks has introduced an extended-range electric truck for combinations with a gross weight of up to 80 tonnes. According to the manufacturer, it can travel up to 420 kilometres on a single charge at 76 tonnes, the maximum combination weight permitted in Finland. Potential applications include on-road timber transport.
The new Volvo FH Electric and FH Aero Electric variant is designed for rigid trucks with trailers, targeting markets that operate at higher gross combination weights than the European average.
Sales will begin in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland, with the trucks introduced gradually across these markets from early 2027.
At a gross combination weight of 64 tonnes, Volvo quotes a range of up to 450 kilometres. At 74 and 76 tonnes, permitted in Sweden and Finland respectively, the stated range is up to 420 kilometres. Actual range depends on factors including weather, wind resistance, gross combination weight and driving style.
“We are proud to introduce yet another fantastic zero tailpipe emission truck, tailormade for really heavy loads and long distances. Combined with fast-charging capabilities, we believe many customers will be interested in this new truck,” says Jan Hjelmgren, Senior Vice President Product Management at Volvo Trucks.
Hub-reduction axles for demanding applications
Volvo is also introducing hub-reduction axles with the new combination. According to the manufacturer, these provide greater ground clearance under the axles and improve startability at higher gross combination weights.
Volvo identifies on-road timber transport and lighter construction work as suitable applications. The higher technical load rating also supports greater payload capacity in operations on good roads.
“High total weights in truck transport lower both transport costs and environmental impact. If we also electrify these transports, we take an important step towards more sustainable transport,” Hjelmgren says.
640 kWh of usable battery energy
The truck uses the powertrain introduced in Volvo’s new generation of electric FH, FM and FMX trucks in April. It includes an eight-speed transmission developed for electric motors.
The updated batteries provide 640 kWh of usable energy. Volvo says they offer a longer service life, while an updated battery monitoring system and improved insulation for colder climates help the batteries operate more efficiently and retain more energy.
Both Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and CCS2 charging are supported. According to Volvo, charging from 20 to 80 percent takes approximately 36 minutes using 680 kW MCS charging, or around 70 minutes using 360 kW CCS2 charging.
An electric power take-off (e-PTO) allows equipment such as refrigeration units to operate without a separate diesel generator. All Volvo FH cabs except the XXL are available, including both standard and Aero versions.
